Bydureon BCise (Exenatide)
Bydureon BCise (Exenatide) is FDA-approved to help manage blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It’s used in adults and children ages 10 years and older, in certain situations. Bydureon BCise is a brand-name injection that’s prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Bydureon BCise contains the active drug extended-release exenatide and belongs to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist drug class.
How To Inject
You’ll use an autoinjector to inject Bydureon BCise. Push the autoinjector against your skin, and it will automatically inject your dose. The medication should be injected into either your abdomen, your thigh, or the back of your upper arm.
Each autoinjector is used to give just one dose of Bydureon BCise.
How Is Bydureon Used?
Bydureon is given by injection under the skin once a week on the same day each week in the abdomen (belly), thigh or back of the upper arm. Patients inject themselves once they have been trained.
When adding Bydureon to a sulphonylurea (another type of diabetes medicine), the doctor may need to reduce the dose of the sulphonylurea because there is a risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood glucose levels). When adding Bydureon to insulin, the dose of insulin may also need to be adjusted.
Patients using both Bydureon and insulin should inject the medicines separately.
How Does Bydureon Work?
The active substance in Bydureon, exenatide, is an ‘incretin mimetic’. This means that it acts in the same way as incretins (hormones produced in the gut) by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas in response to food. This helps to control blood glucose levels.
Storage Of Bydureon
Should be stored flat in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C). BYDUREON BCise can be kept at room temperature not exceeding 86°F (30°C) for up to 4 weeks.
